AT&T Touts Network Investments to Support iPad
Now that AT&T has taken its lumps from competitors and users over the size of its 3G network, the company is determined not to be caught flat footed again.
Just one day after Apple announced that its new iPad tablet would be available on both AT&T and Verizon, AT&T began touting investments in its 3G HSPA network that the company believes will give it the ability to handle increased traffic from mobile devices. During a conference call Thursday, AT&T COO John Stankey said that the company was investing $2 billion in improving its wireless network in 2010 and that it would construct roughly 2,000 new cell sites to expand its coverage. We're just over 48 hours away from the grand unveiling on Wednesday when Apple will show off to the world its "latest creation." Report: Microsoft's Bing Could Power the iPhone
In an unexpected turn of events, Microsoft's Bing could end up powering the Apple iPhone, if talks between Apple and Microsoft come to fruition.
The talks, according to BusinessWeek, have not reached fruition. A deal between Apple and Microsoft may mean iPhone owners would automatically get Microsoft's Bing as the main search engine, possibly requiring users to actively change phone settings if they want to search via Google. Read more...

Close Up with LG's Intel-Powered GW990 Phone
Yesterday at CES, LG surprised everyone with a (literally) huge new smartphone—the GW990, the first phone built on Intel's Moorestown platform, using Intel's Moblin Linux operating system. I got some close-up, quality time with the phone today.
For one thing, the GW990 is huge. It's a thick brick with a 4.8-inch, 1024-by-480 display that's positively gorgeous. The phone strains the concept of "pocketable." Intel's chips have been criticized for not lending themselves to lightweight or slim devices, and the GW990 doesn't do much to dispel that idea. Read more...

MagicJack Harnesses Femtocell for VoIP
MagicJack is demonstrating a device near the International Consumer Electronics Show this week that it claims will let consumers make VoIP calls using any GSM phone.
The company already sells a MagicJack made for use with conventional, analog desk phones. In the new product, coming in the second quarter of this year, it will replace the phone jack with a miniature GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) base station, or femtocell. Any GSM phone from any carrier will be able to connect with the femtocell to make VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol) calls to anyone in the U.S. and Canada, MagicJack founder Dan Borislow said. Hands On: Google Nexus One
On Wednesday night, I spent 20 minutes poking around on the Google Nexus One, the latest smartphone to run Google's Android operating system. As a Motorola Droid owner, I was upset with the fact that my handset is now only the second-fastest Android device, though I was eager to take the Nexus One for a spin – and definitely liked the ride.
The OLED screen on the Nexus One is spectacular—blacks looked inky black. Next to an iPhone and Motorola Droid, the colors on the Nexus One were vivid. Read more...

More Confirmation Apple Will Use Its Own Chips For the Apple Tablet
The Street has learned, by way of an analyst who talked to Apple's design manufacturing partners, that Apple won't be using Intel on their upcoming tablet. Instead, they're going to use chips made by PA Semi, their own chip foundry.
It's basically what everyone thought since Apple bought the chip company—since there haven't been any products out yet that have used the chips. It'd be interesting to see what PA Semi comes up with for the tablet; since Apple can dictate exactly what hardware they want, it'll definitely be more optimized than just using an Intel solution. Google Nexus One Buzz Busted By Harsh Reality Check
ABC News has published this doomsday piece by Michael S. Malone, who notes that while Google's Nexus One device is getting a lot of buzz, it won't rightfully challenge Apple's iPhone hegemony.
Google is expected to unveil the device Jan. 5 at an Android press event at the company's Mountain View, Calif., Googleplex. We know the device is made by HTC, runs Android 2.1 and is super fast, with a Motorola Droid-like big touchscreen. Read more...
