Apple Sues Google Phone Maker HTC
Apple has filed lawsuits against HTC, claiming the manufacturer of the Google phone and other mobile devices infringed on patented technology used in the iPhone.
Apple claims HTC, of Taiwan, infringed on 20 patents governing a range of technologies. It filed the actions Tuesday with the U.S. International Trade Commission and the U.S. District Court for Delaware. Read more...

Analyst Scares Up iPad Delay Warning
Don't look now, it's another iPad rumor, this time claiming that production bottlenecks will either delay the iPad's launch or tighten initial inventories of Apple's tablet.
The report comes from Canaccord Adams analyst Peter Misek, who said there's an "unspecified production problem" with iPad manufacturer Hon Hai Precision. This will reportedly limit the number of iPads sold at launch to 300,000, and they'll only be available in the United States. It's possible, Misek said, that Apple will delay the launch until April due to the extremely low number of iPads for sale. Read more...

US seeks to free up airwaves for wireless broadband
Broadcasters could share in the proceeds from airwaves auctions if they agree to give up spectrum to help meet the growing needs of wireless broadband, the top U.S. communications regulator said on Wednesday.

Sprint To Usher In the Year of 4G Wireless
4G wireless--which operates at speeds up to 10 times greater than today's 3G networks--could become a reality for many businesses over the coming year. Sprint, the current 4G leader, says it will introduce its first 4G smartphone before mid-year.
Sprint introduced its 4G WiMAX network in 2008, but so far there have been no handsets to use on it. While the carrier has introduced non-phone devices, such as wireless cards, mobile hotspots, and USB modems for 4G, phones have waited as the network was built out. Read more...

Samsung Hopes Super Screen Will Boost Bada Platform
Samsung is hoping a "Super-AMOLED" capacitive touchscreen will set the GT-S8500 Wave, the company's first smartphone based on its own Bada platform, apart from the competition, it said on Sunday. But analysts are questioning if the platform will be able to attract developers as well.
The Super-AMOLED (Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode) technology offers better brightness than traditional AMOLED displays and will, for example, perform better in sunlight, according to Samsung. The screen measures 3.3-inches and has a 480 x 800 pixel resolution. It also uses tempered glass for better durability and an anti-smudge coating, Samsung said. The display looks "stunning," market research company CCS Insight said in a research note. Read more...

Ericsson, Alcatel Get 4G Network Contract From AT&T
Telecom equipment vendors L.M. Ericsson Telephone Co. (ERIC) and Alcatel-Lucent (ALU) Wednesday said they have been selected as suppliers for a next-generation wireless network for AT&T Inc.(T), the largest wireless operator in the U.S.
The deal marks another key win for the two companies as equipment makers fight to win the first major orders for Long Term Evolution, or LTE, a fourth-generation wireless network technology that offers higher traffic speeds than older standards. Read more...

Google Drops Nexus One Recovery Fee
Prodded by the Federal Communications Commission, Google has lowered the fee it charges users who return its Nexus One before their contracts expire. The "equipment recovery fee" is now $150 instead of the initial fee of $350.
Users, however, will still face a separate $200 fee charged by T-Mobile USA, which is offering the handset in the U.S. Users of the Nexus One have flooded user forums with complaints, many of which seem centered on the actual network service itself. The most frequent gripe has been that the service drops from 3G to the slower 2G EDGE service. Read more...

Sling: We didn't 'work' with AT&T for 3G streaming to iPhone
AT&T made headlines Thursday by announcing that it had decided to allow SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone to stream video from a Slingbox over its 3G network. AT&T's CEO claimed in the announcement that Sling Media modified the app to be more efficient on its network, but Sling has responded, saying it didn't have to change a thing.
"Sling Media was willing to work with us to revise the app to make it more bandwidth sensitive," AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega said in a statement early on Thursday morning. "They made important changes to more efficiently use 3G network bandwidth and conserve wireless spectrum so that we were able to support the app on our 3G mobile broadband network." Read more...

Amazon buys touch-screen manufacturer to beef up Kindle
In an effort to play catch-up with the Apple iPad, Amazon has reportedly acquired Touchco, a New York start-up specializing in touch-screen technology.
According to the New York Times, the touch-screen technology developed by Touchco is substantially cheaper than the capacitative touch screens used for the iPad, at around $10 per square foot. Read more...

Google's Chrome OS Will Be for Tablets, Too
When Google announced its Chrome OS last year, it intended this operating system to be for netbooks. Last week's unveiling of the Apple iPad has made tablet computers hot, though, and Google is making sure its upcoming OS will have this class of devices covered, too.
To make this happen, the Chrome OS will clearly have to be modified to include features not generally used by netbooks. At the top of this list is support for touchscreens. An on-screen keyboard will also be a necessity. Read more...
