IPad Battery Tests and Application Performance
Apple's iPad is impressive in many ways; having seen its responsiveness in demos and its touted long-life battery claims, I was anxious to get my hands on one for some real-world testing. And my results show battery life that exceeds Apple's claim and quick application performance.
Apple claims up to 10 hours of battery life when "surfing the web, watching videos, or listening to music." I connected the iPad to my home's wireless network and transferred a movie rented from the iTunes store from my MacBook Pro to the iPad. Once the movie was loaded and playing, I unplugged the fully charged iPad and took note of the time. Read more...

Demand for iPad Is Put to the Test in Debut
Apple Inc. officially debuted the iPad Saturday, as hundreds of people swarmed the company's flagship retail outlet in Manhattan, finally putting demand for the tablet computers to the test after months of hype and questions about how broadly consumers will accept the device.
Apple stores opened their doors at 9 a.m. Eastern time to people willing to fork over at least $499 for an iPad. People who pre-ordered online by March 28 could have had their iPads delivered to their homes over the Easter holiday weekend. Many buyers instead herded into Apple retail stores around the country for the camaraderie and bragging rights of being among the first people to hold and own an iPad. Read more...

Rumor: Two New iPhones, One for Verizon
Could it be? The WSJ busts out the "breaking" graphic on the front page to say a new iPhone's coming this summer, and Apple "appears to be working on another model for U.S. mobile phone operator Verizon Wireless." Updated.
Update: The details are in. A second new iPhone that runs on CDMA—Verizon and Sprint's cell tech of choice—is being made by Pegatron, while the GSM model will continue to be produced by Hon Hai (aka Foxconn), according to the WSJ. Presumably, the hardware would be exactly the same in both, except for the cell networks they run on. A more recent version of the article adds the the phones are "likely to be thinner" too. Windows Phone 7 Series: Everything You Need to Know
Devices running Windows Phone 7 Series software won't hit store shelves until later this year, but Microsoft recently offered a peek into the upcoming OS at its MIX10 conference for developers and Web designers. The latest version of Microsoft's mobile platform promises to deliver a radical shift, with a new focus on features like social networking, the Web, and gaming.
The new mobile platform comes not a moment too soon, as Microsoft looks to shed its image as an also-ran in the mobile space. Metrics firm comScore recently reported that, of the 42.7 million smartphone users in the United States, Windows Mobile user adoption had dropped by four points from 19.7 percent to 15.7 percent between October 2009 and January 2010. During that same period, Apple gained just 0.3 percent to maintain its 25 percent marketshare, while Google's Android grew by 4.3 percent to take 7.1 percent of the U.S. market. Research In Motion's Blackberry devices are still the most popular mobile devices in the U.S., claiming 43 percent of smartphone users. Read more...

Apple turns iPad mute button into screen rotation lock
Apple revealed a minor tweak to the iPad hardware when preorders began Friday morning, with a button previously designated for audio muting changed to a "screen rotation lock."
As first noticed by Jim Dalrymple at The Loop, the switch, located just above the volume controls on the right side of the device, is now devoted to locking the screen orientation in its current state. Previously, the switch was used to mute the iPad. Read more...

Hoover’s Near Here app brings sales data to the iPhone
Hoover’s, a well-known service that provides business data to salespeople and marketers, just released its first iPhone app. If you’re a salesperson who spends a lot of time on the road, the Hoover’s Near Here app may help you find potential sales.
Basically, the app is a location-based directory of sales leads. So if a salesperson is on a business trip and suddenly finds that they have some time to kill, they don’t have to just sit around — the app can help them figure out where they might make sales calls nearby. You can bring up a map of your area with markers for the surrounding companies in Hoover’s database. You can even narrow down your search based on industry type, number of employees, and annual sales. And if you find a company that seems like a potential customer, you can just press a button and call them from within the app. Read more...

Jobs: iPad Won't Tether with iPhone
It should come as no small surprise for those still waiting for some kind of tethering option for their iPhones, but Apple's iPad, scheduled to launch April 3, probably won't support tethering either. That's according to Steve Jobs himself, who made the brief--if not curt--announcement in response to an emailed question from Swedish record producer Jezper Söderlund.
It's a fair question to ask, as the tethering situation for Apple's iPhone can be confusing enough as-is. Officially, the iPhone can share its mobile or WiFi connection with an attached desktop or laptop. It's not a question of the phone's technology; it's a question of the phone's carrier. AT&T, the iPhone's sole carrier in the United States markets, doesn't yet support tethering. Though it promises to bring this feature to iPhones eventually, there's been no set date for deployment—just a promise that it'll come "at some point in the future," says AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel.
