IFixit gets iPhone 4 prior to release, publishes 'teardown'

IFixit, the San Luis Obispo outfit known for prying open and analyzing high-profile gadgets the day they hit stores, has bested its usual schedule. The electronic parts reseller acquired an iPhone 4 on Tuesday night, two days before its planned launch, and began posting a teardown, as they call the gadget examinations.

We published a profile of IFixit in Wednesday's Times, detailing the company's last noteworthy teardown, the iPad 3G, compatible with AT&T's wireless network. FCC Takes First Step Toward Regulating Broadband

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission took a first step toward imposing limited regulations on broadband providers  by voting Thursday to launch a notice of inquiry exploring the change.

The commission voted 3-2 to launch the notice of inquiry, or NOI, with its two Republicans voting against the proceeding. The NOI asks for public comment on a proposal by FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski to reclassify broadband as a common-carrier regulated service. Read more...

AT&T Suspends iPhone 4 Sales

AT&T appears to be unable to keep up with demand for the iPhone 4 as it has halted sales of Apple's latest smartphone.

A note on the carrier's Web site early Wednesday informed consumers that," Pre-orders for iPhone temporarily suspended." There was no immediate word from AT&T as to when it might resume sales. Read more...

Apple, AT&T Overwhelmed by Preorders for IPhone 4

Apple Inc. and AT&T Inc., which began taking preorders for a new version of the iPhone today, are struggling to handle demand at their retail and online outlets, according to customers and store representatives.

At Apple stores in San Francisco and New York, the staff recommended that customers try ordering the device from Apple’s website later today or tomorrow. Some calls to Apple’s customer- service line also aren’t getting through because of high volume. Read more...

FBI investigating AT&T iPad security breach

"The FBI is aware of these possible computer intrusions and have opened an investigation to address the potential cyber threat," FBI spokesman Jason Pack said on Thursday.

Try iOS 4 for the iPhone Right Now

If you're champing at the bit to try out iOS 4,  the iPhone's next operating system, and don't mind taking risks with your iPhone, you're in luck. Several blogs are claiming you can try it out now. Apple recently released the near final version of iOS 4 to developers known as the gold master build. After Apple's release it didn't take long before iOS 4 was leaked online and available for anyone to download.

An industrious hacker has also released a jailbreak tool for iOS 4 for the iPhone 3GS, essentially making the new iPhone OS jailbroken. Read more...

Sprint Battles Bugs As It Launches EVO 4G Phone

Sprint officially launched the HTC EVO 4G smartphone on Friday with some interesting social tweaks, although users had already reported at least one bug with the phone's software.

The Sprint EVO 4G phone goes on sale today at Sprint stores for $199 after a $100 mail-in-rebate, new contract, and premium data plan. Wal-mart and Best Buy, at press time, said the two retailers would waive the need to mail in the rebate, offering the phone for a register price of $199. Read more...
